Palliative care is treatment, care and support for people living with a life-limiting illness. A life-limiting illness is an illness that can’t be cured and that you’re likely to die from. Life-limiting illnesses can include:
Palliative care also supports your family and friends. The aim of palliative care is to help you have a good quality of life. This includes making sure you get the care you need to live well. It can involve:
Palliative care is not the same as end-of-life care. You can receive palliative care at any stage of your illness. You can also continue treatment for your illness while you are having palliative care. Lotus HealthCare provides a care team attached which may and can include a carer as the person seeking the support may not have a disability but more importantly there will be a palliative care nurse on site, as a clinical lead and involved with the care.
If you are an NDIS participant and have a palliative care plan in place and are not hospitalised, the NDIS will fund supports required as a direct result of the disability where the support assists the participant (you) to undertake activities of daily living. These supports may be provided at the same time as palliative care supports. We also fund this privately or through any other relevant funding stream.
Our support workers provide palliative care that is personalised to each family's specific needs at a time when a variety of different assistance is likely to be required. Supports can be provided for a few hours at specific times, occasional assistance in special circumstances, or full time, 24/7 care. Palliative care encompasses a range of supports, and can include disability care, pain management, help with household tasks, and supporting overall mental and physical health and wellbeing.
